Why do some putters have loft on them?

The average putter has 4 degrees of loft, a ball sitting on the green will settle in even the shortest grass (only very slightly obviously) and the loft will pick the ball up and get it rolling. To most of us it probably doesn't make that much difference but the science behind it is pretty sound.
