Why did god change the rules?

In the old testament there are lots of rules...but Jesus got rid of those rules when he was crucified? Why did he have to send Jesus to change the rules? Could he just have told Abraham or Moses or Noah about what the new rules were, I'm confused why he would change what is right & wrong later?
