My girlfriend broke up with me and says she needs her space?

So my girl and I have been dating for 5 years lived together for about 3 1/2. She has done so much for me I mean literally screening from laundry to making me or buying me dinner. Then a couple of months ago my parents got divorced and it hit me really bad. I started abusing alcohol and drugs. Then started a very stressful job. She was always there for me but when I used to get a little to messed up I would go off her. She basically got all her stuff moved back in with her family and says she needs space and time. She said maybe we could be friends but first we both have to get our lives straighten out. I really love her and just want to know what to do. Thank you for any replies.
